Hugh of Paris rejoiced. He had been offered the opportunity to wed Hedwige of Saxony, the sister of Otto, the king of the Germans and the Holy Roman Emperor. Beyond a doubt the union had only become viable due to the emperor's recognition of Hugh's ascendency. Hugh knew Otto was very well informed of political matters as a result of his extensive spy networks. Otto of course sought to align himself with a man he percieved would be a power in the kingdom of the Franks. But, far from taking offense at the German king's rather obvious ploy, Hugh was very gratified and eager to take advantage of the opportunity. Alligning himself with the emperor would gain him a great deal of power. Not only power for the present, but power for his house in the future. The Holy Roman Emperor, at least in theory, determined who would be the future kings of not only the Franks, but of all the realms in the Empire. Although it was true that in reality he was forced to acquiesce to will of the powerful nobles of the Franks, in matters where there were contenders with no clear dominence, his will would be the deciding factor. Clearly were one of those contenders a close relative, the emperor's choice would be obvious. If you enjoy these posts, please leave your comments below. If you do not enjoy them please feel free to leave your comments also. The truth is that telling me what you do not enjoy will probably help me more than the positive comments. (although I may not enjoy them as much) But in all seriousness, I desire this to be a post my readers enjoy, and the best way for me to do so is to get feedback. Thus any and all feedback will be valuable and appreciated. Also, if you have any individuals from history you would like me to dramatize, whether it is the story of someone from years ago like Billy the Kid, or someone from recently like Ronald Reagan, just suggest them. I cannot promise to tell their story immediately, but if I know someone wants to read it, I will feed it into the loop as soon as I can. Thanks. |
